TREE SPECIES, TAXONOMY AND DISTRIBUTION

NATIVE TREES OF THE MEDITERRANEAN REGION
An inventory of 496 species and 147 subspecies of trees in the Mediterranean region. With data on species extinction risk and genetic diversity that are vital for forest conservation and restoration.
Across the geographical zone under Mediterranean climate in North Africa, Western Asia and Europe. A group of 30 researchers based in North Africa, the Middle East and southern Europe gathered and analysed a large data set on the presence or absence of tree species (European Forest Institute 2025, Fady, Farsakoglou, Caron et al. 2025).

The geographic coverage of the database is available at:

POWO. Plants of the World Online.
Facilitated by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
A continuously updated online resource of occurrences of plant species, subspecies and varieties worldwide, at country or regional level.
Launched in March 2017 by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, POWO is an international programme that aims to make available digitized data of the world’s flora gathered from the past 250 years of botanical exploration and research. It delivers information on the taxonomy, identification, images, distribution, traits, threat status, molecular phylogenies and uses of vascular plants worldwide. The data are sourced from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew as well as its partners and collaborators who contribute data. and make it openly accessible on POWO. GUTI. Global Urban Tree Inventory
A database of the diverse tree flora that inhabits the world’s cities.

"The Global Urban Tree Inventory (GUTI) is a compilation of datasets on tree species found in cities and towns throughout the world. GUTI data can be used to address a diverse range of theoretical and applied investigations related to species’ biogeography and distribution, ecological and physiological tolerance to climatic, biophysical and environmental parameters, as well as plant conservation and invasion." (Ossola et al 2020).

Euro+Med PlantBase

new data portal on occurrences of plant species, subspecies and varieties of the Mediterranean Basin, at country or regional level.

It covers all native and introduced vascular plants from Europe, the Mediterranean and the Caucasus. The data portal integrates and critically evaluates information from Flora Europaea, Med-Checklist, Flora of Macaronesia and from regional and national floras and checklists as well as additional taxonomic and floristic literature. (Euro+Med-Plantbase n.d.

BGCI. GlobalTreeSearch
Botanic Gardens Conservation International.
Richmond, UK.
Published in 2017, ‘GlobalTreeSearch’ is the first database of its kind, documenting all of the world’s known tree species and their country level distributions. The database is the result of over two years of work to gather both tree species names and their country level distributions. 'GlobalTreeSearch' is used as a tool for monitoring and managing tree species diversity, forests and carbon stocks on a global, regional or national level (BGCI 2023).
